About the Data Walk
Data walks in a business context provide an interactive and practical way to engage employees with data and show them how data adds value to their work. By using concrete examples, data literacy becomes more tangible and relevant.
Data walks can take place in many professional contexts. Here, we describe a production or manufacturing environment.
What to expect
The workshop begins with a brief introduction to data literacy and the importance of data in the manufacturing environment. Then, led by an expert, participants will take a data walk through the manufacturing environment.
The walk will visit several stations where data plays a role, including:
- Production machines: what data is collected by sensors on the machines (e.g., temperature, pressure, vibration)? How is this data used for process monitoring, preventive maintenance and production optimization?
- Quality control: how is data used to control product quality? What data is collected and what analysis is performed?
- Logistics and inventory management: how is data used to optimize logistics processes and manage inventory levels?
- Safety systems: what data are security systems using to detect and prevent risks?
At each station we consider questions like: what data is being collected? How is the data being collected? Who has access to the data and how is it used? What are the benefits of using the data at this site? What decisions are made based on the data?
We will conclude the workshop with a discussion on how data literacy can contribute to more efficient, safer, and higher quality production.
KPIs
- We measure the interest and reach of the workshop.
- We use a post-workshop survey to gain insight into the effectiveness and learning experience.
- We measure how many participants come up with concrete ideas for process improvement based on data. This can be done immediately after the workshop or in a follow-up meeting a month later.
